I loved, loved, LOVED this book! Marissa Ross delivered on everything she promised to teach me, and I heartily laughed all the way through. Yes, the delivery is in the "signature bawdy voice", but that's what I liked - winespeak in plain English with a bit of sass. I fall somewhere squarely between the novice and advanced wine drinker, and I took away an abundance of new comprehension. The pages are full of interesting detail and knowledge. What's more, I realized and now recognize why I like the wine I like, and I am able to try new varietals with confidence. I received this ARC from Penguin's First to Read program, but I enjoyed this book so much, I placed my pre-order half way through finishing it. It will make a great reference guide, and when I reread it, I know I'll become further enlightened. I've already recommended the book to friends and family that would like this book, and now I wholeheartedly recommend it to you!
I am already compiling a mental list of who in my life I want to give this to as a gift. Marissa is like the big sister every girl wishes she had to explain the mysteries of the world. Her voice is so endearing, honest, refreshing, knowledgable and extremely funny. I started laughing out loud only a few pages in and kept on startling the dog I was looking after in reaction to Marissa's hilarious writing throughout the book. I have always loved hearing people's formative experiences with their art or path in life and found Marissa's retelling of her formative years completely compelling. This is certainly a fantastic book for those who need some practical guidance or feel intimidated by wine but I think her extremely likable voice as a writer and her storytelling and amazing humor opens up the audience to even those who are well versed in wine because many of us can relate to humble beginnings as wine drinkers with limited budgets. Can't wait to read her next one!
I loved reading this book - before I was even halfway through I had decided I was going to read it once for entertainment and then a second time to try to really absorb the information. I found myself asking a dude at a wine shop for a recommendation on a bottle by telling him "here's what I know I like ________ (fill in the blank) and I want to try something new, funky, that I probably haven't had before". Got some great recommendations and then took two new bottles home, sat down with the book, dissected the labels, read about the regions and the grapes, and then popped open the bottle and took time to drink slowly and truly appreciate it. The best part was realizing you don't need to spend $40 a bottle to get a great wine, there's plenty of great stuff at $15 if you just know what to ask for / look for. So intrigued by all the info about natural wines too, and all the stuff that gets put into conventional / mass produced wines.anyways, enough raving. TL;DR: This was entertaining, informative, and a useful reference if you want to know just a bit more about wine, just enough to make informed decisions and find drinkable stuff you truly love. No snobbery, just comedy and helpful info!
This book is amazing, it has given me hope for people. It is humble, vulnerable and inspiring. I relate so much to her stories and now feel so much more comfortable looking at wine lists. It's not intimidating! I'm having way more fun drinking wine than ever. I have been telling all my local wine reps and friends to read this book so they realize they don't have to be such a freaky snob to talk about and enjoy wine :) Thank you Marissa!!
Marissa has a gift for making the world of wine instantly approachable. If you're just starting to learn about wine, this book is an amazing resource that will teach you what you need to know, in a hilarious and distinctive voice (if you're reading it in public, get ready for the looks because you will laugh out loud!) If you already know all about wine, don't let that stop you from reading this -- it is an instructional guide, yes, but unlike anything else out there. Marissa's personal anecdotes and passionate descriptive style bring a wicked sense of humor to a topic that too often suffers from a stuffy reputation. (No other wine book is going to explain to you how drinking commercial wine is a lot like "dating" in your early 20s!)
I have been a Marissa A Ross fan since I discovered her reviewing wines hilariously on Hello Giggles and I have had the unique pleasure of evolving with her. As her tastes and knowledge grew- mine did too. I read this book in spurts but now I go back and use it as a reference guide. If you want an intro to wine with a funny, hip edge then this is it.Additionally, Marissa is socially conscious to many causes, hilarious, and SO cool without trying to be. Follow her on IG as well for a dose of cool.Signed, a mom living in the burbs who stays hip solely thanks to MAR.
I learned so much about wine (only knew I liked cabs before I read this and that Franzia is a no-go) -- I seriously have confidence in wine shops and in restaurants. It is incredible. I'm able to choose wines for any occasion or meal/course and have found a DEEP love for Gamay and salty/coastal wine. I now consider wine shop visits to be an adventure...still need to find an orange wine though. But hey! I now know that there is a thing as orange wine -- so there you go. Marissa A. Ross' book is amazing. Get it.
