A terrific book. ! I lived in South East Alaska for many yrs. and while there lived on an island, with my husband and one old man that lived in a cabin down the way. We were the islands only residents. We spent alot of time going back and forth to Ketchikan for supplies etc on our boat and many times in stormy weather but nothing like what you lived through. Your honesty was such a breath of fresh air! If you write more books about your life on your new boat and find you must exaggerate or make up little stories to make it interesting, STOP and write a "fairy tale "instead. Honesty is hard to come by these days, Thank you so much for sharing your life with us, good times and bad.
What a great story! Neil Hawkesford could have come back from his adventurous voyage a totally broken man and stuck his head under a pillow. After his "Foolish Voyage" he nearly does that. The sea has a way of being brutally honest with your soul and is all to willing to kick your ass down the road! This is exactly the tale he tells. The decisions. The preparation. The training. And then the weather that changed his destiny. How would this have turned out if the weather had been different? We will never know but what we do know is that the weather gods were not nice to Neil for those nights and days he was tossed about as he pushed south across the Bay of Biscay bound for Spain. After decades of 'normal', Neil Hawkesford comes to the realization that deep deep inside there still burns an ember that is just looking to burn bright. Many of us likely miss that moment, Neil doesn't and he sets that stage brilliantly in this book. I look forward to reading the next chapter of the adventure.
A Foolish Voyage tells the story of the making of a true voyager. Neil's determination to live a life worth living inspires the reader to do the same: to challenge the status quo and to evaluate a life's direction. It is a story of achieving a dream and the hurdles one must overcome on the way. It is also a story of failure and how it impacts our lives and spirits. For some, failure is an unscalable brick wall, a devastation so complete as to halt the endeavor. For others, it is a challenging opportunity to grow. In A Foolish Voyage Neil bares his soul and allows us, the readers, to join him in the examination of our own failures if we dare.A Foolish Voyage is a stroll through the world of the small-boat sailor in England, rich with the types of characters one always seems to find in the vicinity of small boats and replete with the heady sensations of harbours as well as the open sea. It is at once both a tale of courage as well as doubt, a vivid account of those moments that, if survived, make the stories sailors love to tell “round a pint†or two...much, much later.Deb Akeywww.theretirementproject.blogspot.com
Hawkesford asks the perennial question, 'Isn't there something more to life than the grind of consumerism and striving for prestige?" This is the story of how he finds that 'something' briefly before receiving the equally perennial reply: 'The nail that sticks out gets hammered down.'Told in his natural style, which is admirably unadorned and economical, this is the story of how the hammering of social pressures can do more damage than a storm at sea. Fortunately, the narrative spends more time on sailing than on the all-too-familiar social storms, and his style gives a clue that this nail is going to work it's way loose again.Though the hidebound grammarian might object to Hawkesford's use of sentence fragments instead of complex sentences, the prose flows comfortably, in keeping with the author's search for meaning rather than mindless conformity.Hawkesford writes for those of us seeking our own way of living a meaningful life--sailors, homesteaders, expatriates, mavericks, what-have-you--folks looking for something more.
I enjoyed reading this book. I'm an aspiring sailor so it was fun to read about the adventures the author had while sailing and some of the challenges he faced and survived. He kept the story suspenseful but also provided some of the day-to-day aspects of sailing woven into the storyline. I appreciate the authors honesty about some of the mistakes he has made (we all make them but some are less inclined to admit it). I always believe that sharing stories about the mishaps and mistakes made while sailing can help us learn from each other and be safer at sea. It's a good read for those who enjoy stories about life on a boat at sea. I would recommend it to others interested in reading about this lifestyle.
Both adventure tail and inspirational, I've read a lot of sailing adventure stories. I've also lived on a 41' ketch with my family two different times for a year each time. While the first time was magical and life altering, the second was less so. In the end I took the path Neil describes in his book. Life gets lived with a lot of outside influences. Still now that I have decided that whatever I have is "enough", time is running out on whether to live on a boat or not. The going back and forth is tough. It turns into a vacation rather than a lifestyle choice. For those with mates, such a drastic change will test your relationship. I realize this is not a review of Neil's book but it really is. Loved the emotional honestly and insight into how shame works. Read this one. You won't be disappointed. Better to be disappointed than live disappointed.
Excellent little book. I must have gotten a newer copy, because I found no fault with the writing, despite the negative reviews saying it needed editing. In fact, I thought it was very well written. Having chased my own sailing dream incompletely, I identified greatly with the author. More importantly, as a working stiff, I really identify with the longing for freedom that the sea promises and the author captures so well. His candor and despair at abandoning his boat resonate. I read it in one sitting, and if there's an ounce of longing for freedom and adventure left in your heart, so will you. Well done.
