Amazon.com Review
Open the door and step outside to see how the Arts & Crafts aesthetic has shaped gardens over the years as surely as it has influenced architecture and furniture. This follow-up volume to Inside the Bungalow: America's Arts and Crafts Interior shows the characteristic brick, tile and wood, wide-porched exteriors of the bungalow style half-buried beneath wisteria vines, arbors, flowers, and foliage. The bungalows that the gardens surround range from the archetypal dark, timbered wood and stone to the rustic, grand, and even Southwestern, offering a visual feast of gardens to match. The authors emphasize not specific plants, but the architectural elements and style of such gardens: tiled fountains, pergolas, pathways, and the use of stone, timbers, and courtyards to tie house and garden together. Both text and photos focus in on details like outdoor light fixtures, hose bibs, mailboxes, birdhouses, fences and lattice as part of the characteristic Arts & Crafts aesthetic. The "Garden Portraits" chapter includes garden plans as well as photos of bungalow exteriors from Seattle to southern California, emphasizing that it is not the plants themselves but how they are grouped to emphasize the architecture and the hardscaping that creates an Arts & Crafts garden. Still, there are certain plants that appear over and over again in the photos, and have the right look for such gardens--ornamental grasses, vines, climbing roses, and plants with bold structural foliage like iris, ferns, clivia, and hosta. The charming chapter on potting sheds and tree houses, as well as the exuberant and colorful plantings throughout, go a long way toward explaining why people have been so captivated by "bungalowmania" for more than three decades. --Valerie Easton

Excellent book for recreating historically correct landscaping for craftsman style houses. The arts and crafts intellectual movement - and the architecture and landscaping associated with it - renounced the orderly control and mechanization so symbolic of the Victorian Era, choosing instead to embrace the natural world and the human place within it. This book delves into all that to help the reader understand the philosophy of the movement and it's effect on home landscapes. It also provides lots of period examples illustrating proper A&C landscaping, along with historically appropriate garden accessories (fencing, etc). The book provides lots of pictorial examples of modern A&C landscaping executed in keeping with the A&C movement. I find myself referring to this book regularly. It's lots of fun!
I've got about 10 garden books and this is my top favorite right now. What I like best is that the gardens featured are from small, typical homes. Most garden books show gardens most people can never afford. I appreciate the combination of old photos of bungalow gardens and new photos. I find the diagrams of arbors and fences from the 1920's useful. I want my garden to compliment my bungalow and look timeless. This book will definitely help.
Good book but very California-centric
I'm currently renovating a 1920-era bungalow, and this book has been a real treat and a great resource for planning the landscaping of my property. The photography is absolutely first-rate, and the wide scope of examples provides an overwhelming amount of options to consider. This book is a real treasure for anyone who enjoys the art of the bungalow, whether they're simply a fan, or an owner looking for ideas to improve his or her home. In addition to this book, I also own others in the "series" that deal with the interior design elements.
great book
good plates and the text describes the history of the arts and crafts movement and its impact on gardens
I love all things a&C. Very good.
Great that the botanical names are used for the plant suggestions. A lot of "filler" or redundant text included but the photos are good and self-explanatory.
