When my daughter was called out of town just before the new litter of puppies was to be born, I went into a panic because she had taken charge of whelping our first litter of maltipoo puppies. She was the one who had done extensive research online and had read the pertinent sections in the veterinary handbooks in our home library. I had played the role of ignorant bystander, admiring and cuddling each new puppy as it was delivered - never dreaming I might some day be called upon to handle the whole procedure on my own.NOW, faced with just that eventuality, I started madly doing research all over the net and in our various handbooks. However, I was so panicky and there was so much information out there to absorb that I was more confused than anything else. I was even finding contradictory advice in my searches and didn't know how to determine whose advice would be best to follow. When it became obvious that birth was imminent (in the next few hours), I REALLY got scared and began a frantic search for a kindle book that would be short and authoritative enough to give me just the pertinent, direct informed advice I needed in a clear, well-organized manner that could be absorbed in the limited time I had left before whelping would begin. I cannot thank Myra Savant-harris for providing just what I needed in the nick of time! As a trained professional with a knack for putting the most necessary and pertinent information out in a clear, readable style that would inform as well as soothe a nervous ninny like me, she took me step by step through an understanding of the whole process that was absolutely invaluable.It was as if someone stepped in and took my hand and guided me through what had seemed like a terribly confusing process. I delivered three puppies (one backwards and tangled in the sac) without panic and with the confidence I needed because of this wonderful author's sharing of her vital knowledge. Both her books work perfectly together for a full guide.
Of all the books I have purchased on whelping a litter this is by far the most helpful, especially in terms of emergency situations. If I had to trade all my breeding books and keep one, this would be the one to keep!
This book and dvd are great! I learned so much. I have been through having puppies before and thought i knew a lot but i had soo much more to learn. This book is so informative, easy to read and to understand. Once i stared reading i didn't want to put it down! This is a must have for any breeder or anyone expecting puppies. I have been through losing puppies and that was so hard. I feel much more informed and confident now that i have this book! Wish i had this years ago. You will not be disappointed if you order. This is a fantastic book to have if you are a beginner breeder. However I would suggest you purchase this book before you have a litter that way you are ready in all instances. I wish this book would have been around when I first started Breeding German Shepherda just fantastic information.
It was a great read. But wasn't really needed to have puppies. The mother dog does most of the work. I made a whelping box and that came from the book and turned out great thanks to the book. But at the end of the day, the supplies weren't all needed and I was glad that decided not to buy over half the things it was telling me to buy. Made the box and a heated blanket and used comforter and some white rags and that was it.
Helpful book to anyone looking for help and information regarding puppies... It contains many techniques and lots of information to help successfully raise a litter of healthy pups, and help with problems that might occur. For an experienced breeder, I thought a lot of the information wasn't new, and in some cases I didn't agree with the author's stance. Overall, though, it's a good and comprehensive guide.
Out of a litter of 6 pups we had 5 survive on our first birthing experience for a rescue mom. I can honestly say without this book the surviving pups would have been 3 instead of 5. We had to deal with major bleeding issues and breech births that were handled successfully due to this book. Also, a few of the pups seemed to need some help to get started breathing and this book helped us prepare to help rather than hurt them. The dvd is very helpful, too, for knowing what supplies to have on hand in case of problems and for making a warm travel box. Thanks, all five are thriving now.
The lady that wrote this is an RN that has helped countless women deliver babies. She has since become a dog breeder and has now helped save lots of puppies. She not only tells you what equipment you need but will actually sell it to you herself for what I think is a pretty fair price. She even gives you her e-mail address so you can send her questions through her e-mail. This book comes with a DVD that brings to life what she teaches you how to do in the book. All in all this is the only book that has ever made me feel like I will know what to do when I have a crisis with newborn puppies. In the book this lady says you can reduce your mortality rate by 20%! That's a lot! She says the average amount of puppies that die in infancy is 30% and that you can get it down to 10%. This book is so inexpensive that I think you can't afford to NOT buy it.
