I recently made a second attempt to read Brad Taylor's PIKE LOGAN series, as I had been out of touch with it for many years. Re-reading ONE ROUGH MAN and ALL NECESSARY FORCE reminded me why I loved Taylor's writing, and I pushed on to ENEMY OF MINE, the third installment in the series. In this installment, the Taskforce is tasked with tracking down a mysterious Palestinian assassin known only as The Ghost, who wishes to assassinate the US Secretary of State while he visits the UAE before proceeding to Qatar to deliver a payment to the Palestinian Authority in order to facilitate the Palestinian/Israel peace process. Simultaneously, a familiar enemy from the past returns in the form of the Infidel, who wishes to stop The Ghost in order to later intercept SECSTATE and steal the payment for a big payday. The stakes rise quickly and the mission becomes personal as the book blasts its way to its conclusion.Watching Nephilim "Pike" Logan develop as a character has been nothing short of pleasurable and satisfying, as a reader. When we first meet Logan in ONE ROUGH MAN, he is a former Delta Force operator who had been working for the Taskforce before his family was brutally murdered. He works his way back into the Taskforce through the events of that book, and becomes an affiliate who runs a cover company that facilitates Taskforce movement in denied areas. When we see Pike in ENEMY OF MINE, he is still haunted by the death of his family and is itching for a chance to kill the perpetrator. His propensity for violence is tempered by Jennifer Cahill, the acrobatic civilian whom he first saved in ONE ROUGH MAN before she came into her own as a Taskforce asset. Both of them confront their worst fears throughout the book, and Taylor masterfully navigates the reader through the harrowing experience. The plot is completely plausible, and the action is gripping, tense, and grounded in reality. Both of these are to be expected, as Taylor spent over twenty years in the military, retiring as a Delta Force squadron commander. However, he also displays that his strength is not merely coming up with plausible scenarios, but also exploring the psyches of operators and writing well-written characters, a feat many SOF veterans-turned-writers fall short attempting to achieve.ENEMY OF MINE shows that Taylor is here to stay on the thriller scene, and his work is absolutely deserving of making his name a household one.
At last, Pike has the man who brutally murdered his wife and daughter in his sights. He just doesn't know it until the very end of the book. I like Brad Taylor's writing very much. He has a sense of humor that pops up when you don't expect it. For some reason I found one passage "he sorts his sock drawer alphabetically" utterly hilarious. He and Jennifer are on yet another mission that requires "authorization" from weenies who have never been in the field and are more concerned with their government positions than getting things accomplished. One subject (the "Infidel") they are following is following his own target ("Ghost") to intercept a fortune being couriered by the State Department. The diabolical plot by Ghost doesn't discriminate between his own agenda and collateral damage. The Infidel is a brutal sadistic and pathological killer.Pike does not escape unscathed and is saved in time by his team, but not before he suffers physically and psychologically.
I enjoyed this book especially the up-to-date middle east history by an expert in the field. Found the plot hard to follow as not always clear which assassin was being spoken of because of excessive pronoun use when both were being spoken of in a short period of time. Found this a problem throughout the book which meant I had to reread paragraphs to understand exactly who was being spoken of. Having read many other similar type spy thrillers by Brad Thor, Baldacci, Flynn, Kerr, Silva, I found this very frustrating. This author has tremendous potential because of his vast experience and could become another great spy thriller writer like the others did over time. I also thought that Taylor (Pike Logan) put Jennifer in extremely dangerous situations and then seemed so worried about whether she would survive. His concern did not seem real to me particularly as he did it so often. It seemed like reckless, irrational expectations of her when she was still so new to the game.
Having exhausted reading the other books of my favorite novels by Flynn, Thor, Baldacci, et al, Brad Taylor’s novels have filled the void. I enjoy his characters and the plots and the exciting action Brad’s novels bring. And i like the fact the good guys always win and save the day. Having just read book #3, I can’t wait to start on the next one.
Thought this was going to be another great Pike Logan book and it was for the first three-quarters of it. At that point it took a disturbing, unnecessary turn and ruined the book for me. In fact I had plans to read every book in the series (I just discovered them recently) and every future book but now I'm not sure I will be. This turn might have tainted the series for me. I may just quit now and look for something else. I'm so upset it took this turn.
